THE AVERAGE CAN BECOME MASTERS …

FOLLOWING on yesterday’s post about the young PNG hurdler, I am reminded (and I would that you too) that someone who is an average player in a game can become a master in years to come.

The average guy who plays a sport, if s/he puts in the effort and see how better players are doing, and works to adopt the winning attitude and approach that champions have, in time s/he could also become a champion – a master.
That is possible in sports, music, art, writing, in fact, anything.

The possibilities of going from an average performance to one that is too good to be true require hard work, sacrifice and even changing one’s mentality.

As a person, strive to come out of being just an average performer.
Try to work towards mastering your art, writing, musical instrument, sport or a subject.

May you all have a nice weekend.
Enjoy the weekend in the safest and best way.
Cheers.

BOOK WEEK TALK

I GAVE a talk to students in a school during the National Book Week (August 9) ... This is something I wrote for them ...

MAKE BOOKS YOUR CONSTANT FRIENDS
Make books your constant friends.
Read them when you are in the library.
Read them when you are finished with given work in class.
Read them at lunch time when you are not playing.
Read them at home, when you are done with the chores.
Read them when you have completed your studies.
Read them when you find it hard to go to sleep ... let them be your lullaby instead of calling mother to come and sing you a song every time.
Read them when you go to high school and secondary school.
Read them when you go to college or university.
Read them if you cannot make it to university.
Read them when you work.
Read them when you do not have work.
Read them when you have a boyfriend or girlfriend.
Read them if you do not have any boyfriend or girlfriend – make books your friends.
Read them when you are married. Read them if you remain single.
Read them when you are happy. Read them when you are sad or lonely.
Read them to your children when they grow up. Show them the importance of books when they are as young as you are now so that they will do better than you as they go on in life.
Read them when you have grandchildren. Read it to those small ones too so they become better than their parents.
Students read books as long as you live.
With that I say: Happy 2013 National Book Week Twinky Winky International School.

THE MIND IS A POWERFUL THING

I AM just reminding you that the mind is a power thing.
Learn to use it well.

The word “mind” in the New Testament does not refer to the brain but the “inner you”, often thought to be one with the soul.
I often think of it as the “you” without the “skin”.
It is the “you” when you were small and will be the “you” when you are 60. It is your thoughts, your desires, your will, etc.

When you wish for something … and I mean really wish for it, and are careful to walk in the right way, the wish will draw closer to you.
That kind of wish is like the “unuttered prayer”.

Now watch this: If you wish for something and walk the right way and do the right things, some of what were almost mere wishes and dreams are going to become a reality.

No, you do not learn such lessons in any school – but in the school of life.
Keep walking in the right way and wishing for the best in life. Cheers.

READING THE BOOK OF PROVERBS IN 30 DAYS

IAM challenging myself in another way, I have begun reading the Book of Proverbs – again, for I do not know how many times now. And I have started today.

The Book of Proverbs is good for advice, counsel and encouragement for everybody.
There Wisdom is presented as a valuable quality that the reader must strive to develop in life.
Interestingly, in Proverbs 1:7 it says: The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Another interesting verse is 1:5: A wise man/person will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels.
King Lemuel, the person writing this chapter, urges the young person to listen to his/her guardians in 1:8: My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother.
Lemuel also warns young people not to follow bad characters. He says in 1:10: My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.
I know the exercise of reading Proverbs (again) will be rewarding.

May you also learn and take up the challenge.
You know, you can be very bright but being intelligent is no guarantee that you will succeed in life.
Wisdom is the other thing … in fact, some say it is more valuable than learning any other thing.
In the Old Testament, as in Proverbs, wisdom and knowledge are used interchangeably, meaning they are taken to be the same.
Someone who forsakes wisdom is forsaking knowledge.
(There are 31 chapters in Proverbs and I am reading one a day …)

Have a nice week my friends.
Cheers.

PAYING FOR ZUMBA CLASSES TO SLIM DOWN?

A FEW months ago, our sister, came home telling us about her Zumba classes here in Port Moresby.
Yes, she also needed to slim down.
Sometime later the sister-inlaw also joined the Zumba group.
I do not know how much they are paying for each day’s session, but I think they paid a lot.

Such activities in a developing country like PNG (where 90% of the people live in the villages or rural areas) exist only in the cities.
I often thought how illogical it is - trying to slim down by paying someone else to motivate you through music, dance and exercise.
But then I realized that the two ladies were not like others who had participated in sports when they were younger and those others would know the simple exercises of push-ups, sit-ups or just running to either maintain their form - or lose a few kilos.
Of course, being careful about what you eat and how much you eat is another point that has to be considered.

The ladies said a few men were their classmates in their Zumba lessons.
We thought that was funny.

Personally, I cannot understand why I should pay someone else to slim down – having someone else supervising me?
I reasoned with myself that since I had participated in sports when I was younger, if I wanted to slim down, I do not need another person to fix that up for me – which also means, having to pay him/her some money.

If I was back in the village, I would take time out regularly on most afternoons where my nephews or cousins would be juggling a soccer ball and I could be with them – apart from doing chores around the house.
But for us in the city, we may not have the time and the place and therefore we must come up with plans to do exercises to help us maintain a good form.
For some it could mean, a small jog in the afternoons. For others, it could mean taking a walk over a few kilometres.
And for a few, it could mean just stretching and doing a good number of sit-ups and push-ups. (One missionary I knew used to do that every morning. But then, he was a former military guy.)

Really, I cannot imagine myself paying somebody else to help me slim down.
I should just make time available and go through some simple routines which I should continue on a regular basis.

Learn to exercise while you are young. And try to maintain exercising as you grow older. It helps in a lot of ways.

SLIMMING DOWN PROGRAMME …

HAVE I told you all that I am overweight?
At the start of the year, I urged everybody to come up with goals – academic, career or health goals.

One of my goals was to slim down. And I have come up with my own programme – just a few weeks ago.
(I did not mean to share it … but now that I am letting you all know, I have to keep at it until I have slimmed down.)

When I finish work at midnight, I go home, read a bit, eat and before taking my shower I do some exercises. Exercises past midnight? Yes, it is true.

Often I go to sleep and feel very tired after those exercises. And it seems there is no real visible progress as yet.
But I know that at the back of my mind, all good things take time. (Rome was not built in a day?)
In my case, almost five years of neglect and no real exercise had caused me to swell.
And I cannot expect a four-week effort to change much, right?

So, tonight I will go back to more exercise before shower and rest … and will continue the next night and the next night, ergo.
Cheers.

PS. The exercises are helping me move a bit faster on my feet. That much I can see. And I feel better too.
